What UMGs would you like to see?

Recommended Posts

There was a question elsewhere in the forum from Robert, who said this...

I have collected every issues so far - but I am surprised at some of the omissions thus far.

Is there any news of any of the following being covered as I would really like to see these:

  • AC/DC
  • Free/Bad Company
  • Iron Maiden
  • Siouxsie and the Banshees
  • ZZ Top
  • Madonna
  • Eagles
  • Faithless

...which I have put here for a bit more prominence. It's a fair question. So what else would you like to see?

Let me/us know....

Cheers

John

I did suggest some a few weeks back but in the wrong forum section, so I'll be cheeky and post again..

The Doors (50th anniversary of Jim's death)

T-Rex (50th anni of Electric Warrior)

Nirvana/Foos (30th anni of Nevermind)

Blur (30th anni of Leisure)

Arctic Monkeys (15 yrs since WPSIATWIN)

Jack White is probably well overdue, and I'm surprised we didn't get an Iggy & The Stooges one in 2020. Also badly needed are Deluxe re-issues for U2, Bruce, Costello, Floyd, Lou/Velvets, and Polly Jean.

Well you did ask...!!! 😊

I'm with Rob, especially the suggestion for Blur (and solo/side projects) and deluxe Pink Floyd. Sonic youth would also be on my wishlist, along with Suede, Aphex Twin/Warp label, Scott Walker, Can (Neu, Harmonia, etc.), Miles Davis, Pixies, Smashing Pumpkins..

Frank Zappa would be amazing, but I can imagine it would be quite a task covering his discography. I have a Mojo Classic on Zappa from a few years back, and there's probably been dozens of Zappa Family Trust releases since then!

Also, deluxe editions of Depeche Mode and Kate Bush, mostly because I missed them first time round and they're hard to find!

I figure that for it to be profitable to publish an UMG on an artist, the artist need to have:
A) big sales figures
B) enduring popularity
C) a large discography.
D) a large achieve of articles about them
Also, have they appeared on the cover of Uncut?

So these are the UMGs that I think are most likely:

Nirvana + Foo Fighters
Nirvana has to be the biggest most influential rock act who hasn’t had an UMG yet.
I figure they’re waiting for the 30th Anniversary of Nevermind in Sep to publish this.

Blur
30th Anniversary of their debut album this year.

Rush
After Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Crimson, this seems like the next prog band to do.

Jethro Tull
See above

Stevie Wonder
It’s the 50th Anniversary of his first Tamla album this year.

Patti Smith
Maybe she doesn’t have the big sales figures, but she’s an artist of undeniable significance whose albums deserve deep analysis.

Jack White
I’m surprised they haven’t done this yet. I thought for sure they’d do it at the 20th Anniversary of the first White Stripes album, or when the last Raconteurs album was released.

UMGs I’d love to see, but which don’t really fit Uncut’s readership:
Iron Maiden
Van Halen
Metallica
Pearl Jam

UMGs I’d love but I doubt there’s a big enough audience:
Sonic Youth
Steven Wilson

Guy who deserves an UMG but he gets no respect from journos:
Billy Joel

These editions are fantastic.
Many of the classic rock 60s and 70s acts have been covered.

But I miss one on Rod Stewart, and he did make good music after the 70s

Now that a great issue on T.Rex is out, what about Slade and Sweet

Finally,  american bands

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Allman Brothers
